Very enjoyable book about pack burro racing and adventures that come along with having burros. The chapters were short, so it was an easy book to pick up right before going to bed.
Book Review of Wild Burro Tales
I have been meditating on a new aphorism I read a week ago "life is about execution, not purpose." This quote had me puzzled, we are told daily that life needs purpose to be meaningful. In fact I have suffered anxiety for the past few years because I have been drifting from job to job without a rudder. I did not expect to find enlightenment reading "Wild Burro Tales" but that aphorism became clear to me after reading the book.
Hal Walter runs and races burros, a seemingly awkward hobby. From an American-societal standpoint burro racing does not add purpose, it does not make sense, and it is not safe. The methodological logic of western civilization is being completely ignored by burro racers.
But as I read the short essays, I kept reading about a man that was dedicated to executing daily on something he loved, something that taught him lessons so impactful he wrote them down to share, and in the process of becoming great at his sport, he found purpose in life that went far deeper than racing. This is not a typical work, and that makes it truly wonderful.
The book has given me pause, and I am thankful for it.
Thanks for sharing your passion for burros and for burro racing! For anyone who is considering a burro for packing, racing or for a pet, this is a must read!

These are good stories about a unique aspect of Colorado culture, and they take place in an area I live in and love.
we sent this book to my relatives who lived in Alma for awhile , and they enjoyed "seeing" all the places and people the author talked about. We liked it because we like mules and as an extension I suppose, burros....
I own burros and use them on my mini-farm. I camp with my burros, ride them and drive them in a team. I wanted to read more about their uses. I was pleased with what I read and learned.
Wild Burro Tales is a great selection of short stories, full of nostalgia and heart touching reflection. The first part of the book made me want to race burros. The second made me want to work with children.
